Transit Driver Nominated for NAMI Award |
Dennis Berreth, Sioux Area Metro fixed-route bus driver, was recently nominated for a "Heroes in the Fight" award from The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This award is a recognition partnership program with NAMI established and sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company to celebrate dignity, courage, hope, and recovery in the ongoing treatment of persons with severe and persistent mental illness. The program recognizes and celebrates the heroic work of many people who fight for better mental health and better lives on a daily basis in their community.
Mr. Berreth was nominated for his foresight and encouragement to start up Sioux Area Metro's Route 12. He knew there was a need to get people who have a mental illness to their appointments at the Avera Behavioral Health Center which was not served by a bus route and came up with an effective and cost-efficient way to get a route started. Dennis saw a problem, created a way to fix it, and went out of his way to suggest a solution.
As a driver, Dennis has an exceptional safety record and has had zero complaints in his seven years of service with Sioux Area Metro. With his easy-going nature and quick smile for everyone, he is very popular among the passengers who ride his bus and with his coworkers. Dennis Berreth exemplifies the standards expected of all Sioux Area Metro bus drivers.
